This ground-floor duplex in the leafy Maadi suburb of Cairo was designed to maximize the functionality of the compact space and reflect the owner’s passion for classic furniture and unique flea-market finds. The public area was opened up to create one large space that includes the entrance, reception and dining room, while a small private family room and breakfast nook are tucked away behind the staircase. Classic moldings and cornices are mixed with sleek hardwood floors and a modern glass bannister to create an elegant neoclassical home that is light, airy and warm. Powder blue walls in the formal reception are offset by egg-shell moldings and classic furniture pieces upholstered in a mix of modern patterns and leather. A floor-to-ceiling anitiqued mirror creates a dramatic feature in the dining area, while the cosy informal living area features a vibrant mix of wallpaper and artwork. The small garden was designed to provide privacy and a low-maintenance outdoor space to be enjoyed by the family.
