Client: Private Residence
Completion Date: 2005
Scope: Interior Design
Location: El Gouna, Red Sea, Egypt

Eklego designed the interiors of this Michael Graves-designed summer house in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna, which overlooks both the sea and a golf course. The designers took a lead from the Italian owner of the house, whose nostalgic, orientalist vision of the space was interpreted by the Egyptian designers into a style that incorporates traditional Middle Eastern motifs and local materials into an airy, contemporary environment.

The design focused on using clean lines and contemporary furnishings in a blend of ethnic and modern pieces. Many pieces were custom-made, including an antique mashrabiyya window screen converted into a custom designed coffee table for the main reception room, with custom-made mosaic flooring throughout. The double height reception area is highlighted by the local marble-clad chimney breast that soars upwards while a sunken seating area integrates the design philosophy into the architecture.
